Better Bartlett Birthday Bash

Julie Ray of the Bartlett Express profiles Better Bartlett Schools in a story about the surprise birthday party we threw for Mayor Keith McDonald:

Better Bartlett Schools is an informal citizens group formed about a year ago by Leadership Bartlett Alumni.

“I requested a meeting with the mayor to discuss the formation of a citizens group to explore public involvement and communication between the city and citizens,” said Mick Wright, a founding member of the organization. “Our goal is to serve, and as graduates of Leadership Bartlett, pay it back to the community.”

Graduates of Leadership Bartlett involved in the citizen group also include Derek Venckus, Paula Sedgwick, Mike Burns and Phillip Walker. The group recently formed a committee for fundraising. Future goals are for referendum forums and debates.

When asked what direction the citizens group will take once the school issue is settled, Wright indicated that the group seems headed in the direction of an advocacy group that will push for policy and perhaps help public candidates, much as the citizen group in Memphis known as Coalition for a Better Memphis.
